The central interior of Corsica is sprayed with villages offering a variety of scenery everywhere you go. This is the area of high mountains, rivers and valleys where birds soar over the craggy summits.
The Centre of the island has less holiday properties than at the coast but nevertheless has many attractions for the holiday-maker. Ascu with its majestic valley with green waterfalls where you can stop and bathe is also the name of a charming and picturesque village and a wild fauna reserve that is part of the Natura 2000 programme. The Niolo region is a high plateau with peaks including Mount Cinto an ideal hiking country.
Set at the heart of the Regional National Park is Corte. Between 1755 and 1769 this was the Capital of Corsica and the birthplace of the Constitution of Corsica. A University city is can have up to 400 students making it a young and lively place to visit.
Spectacularly set among the granite mountains Corté it is a joy to visit with its citadel and narrow streets. It is the perfect starting point for many trips with marked trails and for the more adventurous white water rafting and paragliding from Alturghja.
Visit Calacuccia and try water skiing or canoeing on the clear water high altitude lake. Enjoy the waterfalls and cascade in the canyons of Ruda and Frascaghiu.
