This part of Corsica is an area of rugged country side. Cap Corse is the maquis covered peninsula to the North of the island pointing towards mainland France. Being different in terms of its scenery and history from the rest of the island it is more like Italy even as far as its food is concerned. This is much loved by tourists who enjoy the freedom which the area offers. There are many units of self catering to be found here. Nonza is a beautiful village to the east of the peninsula where the black beach is well worth a visit.
Bastia is a charming Mediterranean town, much loved by those on vacation with its characteristic narrow streets and tall houses. It dates back to 1378 and formed by the Genoese and then quickly became the islands capital protected by a 'Bastille' fortress. This towers above the town. Bastia is a vibrant town with shops and beautiful boutiques as you walk along its roads. Many churches grew up in the town around the 17th and 18th centuries. These are well worth a visit.
To the western coast is St. Florent an attractive water front town with a beautiful town square with many apartments and villas to rent. It lies between the mountains of Cap Corse and the Desert des Agriates to the south. Here are many small shops, village restaurants and wine bars along the marina. Take a pleasant walk up to the old fortress for a good view of the harbour. In the season the marina area is alive with yachts and owners enjoying the night life of this lively town.
