About Corsica

Where is Corsica?

Corsica is located about 160kms to the south-west of the French Riviera coast in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is also approximately 80 kms off the coat of Italy in the Tuscany area and at the same latitude as Rome. It also is approximately 13 kms to the north of Sardinia.

Who owns Corsica?

Corsica comprises two Départements which together make up one Region of France. Corse du Sud (2A) to the south has it capital in Ajaccio. This also is the Regional capital and the seat of the Regional Government. Haute Corse (2B) is located to the north of the island and has its Bastia as its capital.

The currency of Corsica is the Euro.

The Landscape

Corsica is the most under-populated department in France. Much is covered in mountains, forests and undergrowth. It is a mountainous area with its highest point being Monte Cintu at 2710metres. It has 20 other mountains over 2000metres high.

The GR20 long distance walking route runs for 200km along the centre of the island. Its challenging route follows the high ground and represents a challenge and generally takes 15 days for the experienced hiker to walk from Calenzana near Calvi to Porto Vechio in the south being the longest walking route in Europe.

Language

French is the official language of Corsica but a large number of people in Corsica speak Corsican Corsu. Many people also speak English and Italian.

Corsica has 4 international airports situated at Figari in the south, Ajaccio in the west, Calvi in the La Balagne area of the North west and Bastia in the North East.
